AI technology to detect Atrial Fibrillation events
The company announced its artificial intelligence solution at the 39th annual meeting of Heart Rhythm Society. The solution can detect a 10-minute long AFib event with a really good accuracy.
Atrial Fibrillation is an irregular beating of the heart that can lead to diseases such as stroke, blood clots and other heart-related irregularities. It is expected at least 2.7 million people in the US have this condition. Some people with this condition have noticeable symptoms such as fluttering or pounding of heart along with nausea, light-headedness.
At the same time, there are people who have no noticeable symptoms of an AFib event. Therefore, it becomes difficult to diagnose this condition.
Seattle-based Bardy Diagnostics, which has been involved in the diagnosis of several heart-related conditions, has unveiled an artificial intelligence solution that can now detect an AFib event.
The company showcased at a poster at the latest Heart Rhythm Society meeting which showed that the technology could detect a 10-minute long AFib event with a validated sensitivity of 95% and specificity of 91%.
The device can be discreetly worn on the chest and keeps on detecting any irregularities with the heartbeat. For women, the company has manufactured another shape of device that cannot be noticed with any kind of clothing.
The company has been working in the field of heart diagnostics for a long time now. It has created several devices that are approved by FDA and also have CE-mark.
These include Carnation Ambulatory Monitor (CAM), a P-wave centric ambulatory cardiac patch monitor and arrhythmia detection device.
Jonathan Wu, director of Marketing for Bardy said, “What we’d love to do is to be able to incorporate this AI-solution into our P-Wave technology, to not only have superior hardware and software, but to be able to apply these automated approaches to then be able to more accurately and more definitively diagnose any type of arrhythmia’s beyond just Afib.”
People are unaware that AFib is a serious condition even though it doubles the heart-related mortality rate. Also, it is alarming to know that it increases the chances of having a stroke by as much as five times.
